CHARLOTTESVILLE – Wyatt Allen, a 2001 graduate of the University of Virginia, recently won the Diamond Sculls title at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-On-Thames, England.
Allen represented the Princeton Rowing Center in the competition and defeated Australia’s Charlie Palmer of the English club Cantabrigian in the final. According to The Associated Press, Allen led from the start and won by three lengths.
Last August, Allen was a member of the United States’ men’s eight crew that won that event at the 2004 Olympic Games. The U.S. hadn’t won gold in the event since 1964.
“It’s great to win one of rowing’s historic events, in fact it’s an honor,” The Associated Press quoted Allen as saying after the competition. “Winning the Olympics is special beyond compare, but this is right up there, too.”
Allen rowed with the Virginia men’s club team from 1998-2001.
