CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia rowers Melanie Kok and Kerry Maher are competing for Canada in international competitions this summer.

Kok, from St. Catharines, Ontario, competed for Canada in the lightweight double at a World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland, the weekend of July 9-10. Kok’s boat finished second in the B final and eighth overall in the competition. There is a possibility she will compete for Canada in the World Championships in Japan in late August.

A rising junior at UVa, Kok has rowed with the Cavaliers’ varsity eight during her first two years in the Virginia program. UVa’s varsity eight won that competition at the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Regatta and finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.

Maher, from Welland, Ontario, is scheduled to compete for Canada in the four without coxswain at the Under 23 World Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, July 21-24.

Maher is also a rising junior at Virginia. She rowed with the Cavaliers’ varsity eight this spring. As a freshman in 2004, she was a member of UVa’s varsity four that won an NCAA Championship in that event. Maher was a member of Virginia’s second varsity eight that finished first at the 2004 ACC Championships.
