Charlottesville, Va. – University of Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia has announced the hiring of former Cavalier Hannon Wright as an assistant coach on his staff. Wright replaces Conor Gill, who left to pursue other interests.

“I am very pleased to announce that Hannon Wright will be re-joining our staff as a full-time assistant coach,” said Starsia. “I have known Hannon for over 10 years and he has been a loyal and passionate member of the Virginia lacrosse program in a number of different roles. Hannon will be involved in all aspects of the program and we look forward to his creative and enthusiastic contributions. At the same time, I would like to thank Conor Gill for two wonderful years on our staff. Hannon follows an illustrious line of young assistants that includes Conor, Dave Curry, Doug Knight, Tucker Radebaugh and Mike Murphy.”

Wright earned three letters as a reserve goalie from 1996-99. The Cavaliers won the national championship during his senior season in 1999, advanced to the national championship game in 1996 and reached the quarterfinals in 1997 and 1998.

“I’m very excited to be back with a program that I care about greatly and has given so much to me,” said Wright. “It’s a real honor to work with two great coaches and people in coach Dom Starsia and coach Marc Van Arsdale. I am grateful for this opportunity and hope to carry on the best traditions of this elite program.”

This is Wright’s second stint on Starsia’s staff. He served two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach from 2002-03 while attending UVa’s law school. The Cavaliers won their second national championship in five seasons in his final season in 2003.

He has two degrees from UVa. He received his bachelor’s degree in English in 1999 and earned a law degree in 2003.

Following graduation from law school, he spent nine months coaching in Australia. Last season he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Notre Dame, working with Irish goalies freshman Joey Kemp and three-year starter Stewart Crosland.

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Wright was a two-time All-Prep standout at Norfolk Academy. Wright begins his duties at UVa next week.
