BUFFALO, N.Y. – University of Virginia men’s tennis player Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) won a doubles title at a USTA Futures Event in Buffalo, N.Y. last weekend. Huey teamed with Izak van der Merwe, a former standout at Old Dominion, to win the title of the 16-team draw by beating the top two seeded teams.
Huey and van der Merwe won all four matches in the tournament in straight sets. In the first round, they upset second-seeded Raphael Durek and Sadik Kadir of Australia. After wins over unseeded teams in the quarterfinals and semifinals, they defeated top seeded Tres Davis and Nick Monroe, who are ranked No. 565 in the world.
“We are happy for Treat as he has worked so hard on his tennis over the past year,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “He continues to develop his game to the next level and we are really pleased with the strides he continues to make.”
The USTA Futures Tour is a professional tour designed for players building their professional careers. Current college players are allowed to play on the tour to gain experience and improve their ranking, while not accepting prize money.
