Today’s Game: The Cavaliers hit the road for the second consecutive game as they travel north for a top-ten showdown with No. 6 Penn State. Both teams have 3-0 records on the season after posting wins in the mid-week. Virginia traveled to James Madison on Wednesday and downed the Dukes 1-0. The Nittany Lions hosted Loyola (Md.) on Thursday night and recorded a 5-0 win.

The Series: This is the fifth all-time meeting in the series, which Penn State leads 3-1. The Nittany Lions have won the last three meetings in the series. The last time the teams met was in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, a round of 16 game that Penn State won 3-0 at Jeffrey Field.

Against the Big Ten: Penn State is the only Big Ten team on the Cavaliers’ 2005 schedule. All-time, Virginia is 6-7-1 against current members of the Big Ten. The Big Ten is the only conference the Cavaliers have a losing record against. The Cavaliers enter Sunday’s match on a four match losing streak against the Big Ten since a 5-2 win over Penn State at Jeffrey Field in 1997.

Against the Top Ten: Sunday is the Cavaliers’ first meeting of the season against a team in the Soccer America Top Ten. The last time UVa played a team in the Soccer America Top 10, the #4 Cavaliers tied #1 North Carolina in the ACC Tournament Final last season (UVa won the title of penalty kicks, 5-4). Virginia’s last win over a top ten team came on September 24, 2004 when the #3 Cavaliers won at #8 Florida State, 1-0.
