UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 5 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer suffered its first loss of the season, falling 5-2 to No. 6 Penn State in front of a Jeffrey Field record 2,768 fans Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers fall to 3-1 on the season with the loss, while the Nittany Lions improve to 4-0 on the year. The loss also snapped Virginia’s 21-game unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents, since a 1-0 loss at Ohio State in 2003.
Penn State took an early lead in the 16th minute, when Carmelina Moscato sent in a cross that deflected off a Cavalier defender and into the net. Virginia answered to tie the game in the 25th minute, as Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) collected a loose ball in the middle of the box and fired into the far side of the net. Hammond struck again two minutes later to give UVa the lead after Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif,) dribbled down the end line and set up Hammond in the middle of the area. Penn State tied the contest in the 31st minute as Aubrey Aden-Buie sent a through ball through to Tiffany Weimer who scored on the breakaway. Weimer closed out the first half scoring in thr 38th minute when she was fouled in the area and converted the ensuing penalty kick.
Penn State added two goals in the second half, two minutes apart by Moscato after a flurry in front of the net, and by Zoe Bouchelle, who headed home a cross by Moscato.
Overall, Virginia outshot Penn State 16-9 in the game and had a 4-0 corner kick edge. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made three saves in net for Virginia, while Erin McLeod made eight saves for Penn State.
“I think our inexperience showed a bit today,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We played well in the first half, and were a bit unlucky to be trailing at halftime. We had a lot of good chances, but couldn’t take advantage of all of them. Give Penn State credit, the chances they got, they finished, something we weren’t able to do.”
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, September 9, as they host the 2005 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. The Cavaliers play No. 23 Tennessee at 7:00 p.m. after William & Mary and Dayton meet in the first game at 4:30 p.m.
