SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 6 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer concluded play at the UCSB adidas Classic with a scoreless draw Sunday night against No. 4 ranked UC-Santa Barbara. With the tie, the Cavaliers went 1-0-1 at the tournament to open the season, finishing second behind Cal, which won both of its games on the weekend.
The Cavaliers had their best scoring chance in the 76th minute when Nico Colaluca (Coventry, R.I.) found a loose ball in the box and blasted a shot off the right post. Four minutes later, Colaluca received his second yellow card of the match, and the Cavaliers played the remainder of the game a man down. UC-Santa Barbara had a chance to win the match in the first overtime. In the 95th minute, Gaucho forward Eric Avila was fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Tyler Rosenlund took the penalty kick, but Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) dove right and made the save on the kick.
Overall, Virginia outshot UC-Santa Barbara 14-12 in the contest. Burke made four saves to record his second shutout of the season. Kyle Reynish made seven saves in net for the Gauchos.
Virginia returns home for its home opener on Saturday, September 10 when it hosts Charlotte. Game time at Klockner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
