CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer dropped their second consecutive match, falling 1-0 to Tennessee Friday night in the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at Klockner Stadium. Kylee Rossi scored the game’s lone goal with 11 seconds remaining to lift the Lady Vols to their first win of the season.
The Cavaliers (3-2) dominated play in the first half, outshooting Tennessee 9-1 before halftime. However Virginia could not take advantage of those chances and the game was scoreless at the half. The Cavaliers nearly went ahead in the midway through the second half, but Noelle Keselica’s (Gaithersburg, Md.) goal was ruled offsides. Tennessee had a quality chance in the 84th minute as Emily Redberg made a run, but was denied by a diving save by Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.). With 30 seconds remaining, Tennessee won a corner kick, which set up the lone goal of the game. Off the corner, de Vries made a save on the initial Tennessee shot, but the loose ball in the box game to Rossi, who scored off the rebound.
Overall, Virginia outshot Tennessee 13-8 in the game as each team had two corner kicks. Christina de Vries made four saves in net for Virginia, while Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart made five saves for Tennessee.
“This is a very disappointing loss for us,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “In the first half, we were extremely good at times. I think as the game went on we didn’t make as many good decisions. On the goal, we didn’t clear the initial ball, and after that, it is a 50-50 ball in the box.”
The loss snapped the Cavaliers 21-match home non-conference unbeaten streak (18-0-3) dating back to a 2-1 loss to West Virginia in the 2002 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. The loss also marks the first time since the 2003 season that Virginia has lost consecutive games.
In the first game of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, William & Mary and Dayton played to a 1-1 tie. The Cavaliers will take on Dayton Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., with Tennessee and William & Mary meeting at noon.
