CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 14/5 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team opened its 2005 home slate Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Charlotte in front of 1,998 fans at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers got second half goals from Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) and Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) as they improved to 2-0-1 on the season.
The Cavaliers and 49ers (0-3-0) played a scoreless first half with neither team putting together any good scoring chances. Virginia took control of the game in the second half. In the 50th minute, Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) took a corner kick that was cleared by the Charlotte defense right back to him on the wing. He sent a cross from the wing that found Cristman making a run towards the goal and Cristman headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 Cavalier lead. Virginia added a second goal in the 71st minute. Ian Holder (Norfolk, Va.) sent a through ball to Reyering. On the breakaway, Reyering had his initial shot saved by 49er keeper Josh Beachem, but the rebound came right to Reyering, who put in the rebound for his first collegiate goal.
Overall, Virginia outshot Charlotte 10-9 in the contest. UVa keeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) made two saves to record his third consecutive shutout to start the season. Beachem made two saves in net for Charlotte.
“The start was not what I was looking for in terms of energy,” said Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch. “I think in the second half, some things started to sink in and we took our level up a couple of notches. Once we did that, it really made a difference in our play.”
Virginia continues its homestand on Wednesday as it hosts Longwood. Game time at Klockner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
