Virginia’s men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up their 2005 season with team championships at the Lou Onesty Invitational held today (Sep 10) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. Virginia’s Emily Harrison, who ran for the USA at the NACAC Championships earlier this year, set the pace for the women with her first-place finish in 17:44.23, 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. On the men’s side, Soeren Lindner, who qualified for the NCAAs last year along with Harrison, led a 2-3-4-7 finish as the Cavaliers scored 28 points.
Harrison led four Cavaliers in the top 10, as first-year Lauretta Dezubay finished seventh in her inaugural race as a collegiate harrier, running 18:24.40. She finished just ahead of teammates Kara Scanlin (9th, 18:31.62) and Kristin Milot (10th, 18:35.21) as the Hoos had eight runners ahead of the Tribe’s fourth runner, helping Virginia edge William & Mary 40-62. The Cavaliers’ pack of seven finished separated by just 22 seconds.
Lindner (2nd, 24:31.46) edged teammate Andrew Dumm by .43 seconds and first-year Andy Biladeau by 2.84 seconds as the triumvirate went 2-3-4. Jeff Eggleston’s seventh place finish of 24:42.73 gave the men four finishers in the top-10, and Alex Tatu beat two Duke runners to the line to push Virginia past the Blue Devils, 28-67. The Cavaliers five scorers all finished ahead of Duke’s third runner and William & Mary’s second runner.
The Cavalier women are ranked 25th in the opening FinishLynx/NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country National of the 2005 season.
Virginia will return to action at the Great American Cross Country Festival on Sept. 24 in Cary, N.C.
