DAYTON, Ohio – Third-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) tallied a season-high 16 kills to help lead the Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-27) victory over Indiana State Saturday (September 10) in the Marriott Flyer Invitational at the Frericks Center. The Cavaliers finish the tournament with a 2-1 record and improve to 3-3 on the season. Earlier in the day on Saturday, UVa fell to Mississippi State 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-25). Indiana State went 0-3 in the tourney and falls to 0-10 on the season.
Osco posted a .353 hitting percentage in registering 16 kills in the win over Indiana State. She also added five digs. Second-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) tallied a .391 hitting percentage with 12 kills and also added five digs, two service aces and two block assists. Second-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va./Evangel Christian School) was the third Cavalier to reach double digits in kills as she notched 10 in 19 attempts for a .526 hitting percentage. Oakes also led UVa with three blocks. First-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) added eight kills and a pair of blocks.
First-year setter Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) handed out 26 assists to lead the Cavaliers in that category. Third-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) dished out 12 assists and led Virginia with three service aces. Second-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) tallied 13 digs.
Tessa Wolf and Christy Trame led Indiana State with 10 kills apiece. Trame also registered a match-high five blocks. Setter Tera Fish posted the only double-double of the match with 26 assists and 10 digs. Kristy Cox led Indiana State’s defensive effort with 18 digs.
The Cavaliers hit .232 in the match with 49 kills, while Indiana State hit .149 with 40 kills. UVa also held a 9-5 edge in service aces. The Sycamores held a 64-49 advantage in digs and an 8-5 edge in team blocks.
Virginia returns to action September 16-17 when it hosts the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament at Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers begin the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match Friday against Appalachian State. On Saturday, UVa plays Liberty at 1:00 p.m. and Albany at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
