CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team concluded play at the 2005 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic with a 2-2 tie with Dayton Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers are now 3-2-1 on season after the draw.

The Cavaliers took an early advantage with a 9th minute goal. Off of a corner, Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) hit a cross to the far post that was headed in by Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.). Dayton answered to tie the game in the 26th minute. Off of a free kick, Courtney Sirmans headed a shot off the crossbar, but the rebound came right to Reba Sedlacek who headed in the ball. The Flyers (3-1-2) took the lead in the 37th minute on another free kick. Sirmans struck a ball from 40 yards out into the box that was flicked on by Alicija Bredlo to April Carvajal, who headed home the goal.

In the second half, the Flyers played defensively and allowed the Cavaliers to mount chance after chance. The Cavaliers drew even in the 89th minute on a free kick play of their own. Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) struck a ball into the box that was headed on by Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) to Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.). Sauerbrunn then crossed the ball to Keselica who sent a shot inside the far post for the equalizer.

In overtime, the Cavaliers had several quality chances but could not score the winner. A goal by Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) late in the second overtime was disallowed by an offsides call.

Overall, Virginia outshot Dayton 16-6 in the game and had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made one save in net for Virginia, while Niki Reed made eight saves for Dayton.

“Given the way the game went, we were lucky to get a draw today, said head coach Steve Swanson. “Early on, we did what needed to do and got a goal early. But then we gave them life with a goal and even more life with the lead. They then sat back and made things difficult for us, but we kept fighting and salvaged something from today.”

Tennessee won the 2005 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic after playing to a 1-1 tie with William & Mary in Sunday’s first game.

The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, September 16 as they host St. Bonaventure at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
