CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 4 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated Longwood 4-0 Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium to set two milestones. The win was the 600th all-time victory for the program and the shutout marked the first time in school history the Cavaliers have opened a season with four consecutive shutouts.
The Cavaliers dominated play from beginning to end, outshooting the Lancers 21-0 in the game. Virginia got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute, as Jeremy Barlow (Herndon, Va.) sent a ball into the box that Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) flicked on to Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany), who blasted a shot inside the far post from 18 yards out. It was the Cavaliers’ first first-half goal of the season, as UVa took that 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cavaliers added to their advantage in the second half with three goals. In the 64th minute, Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) send a free kick into the box that was headed by Ian Holder (Norfolk, Va.) to Cristman, who headed the ball in from 6-yards out. Virginia struck again in the 72nd minute as Drew Harrison’s (Roanoke, Va.) cross was headed in by Holder. Virginia added a fourth goal with 16 seconds remaining as Milovan Milosevic (Belgrade, Serbia) struck a ball off a Lancer defender into the net for an own goal.
In addition to the Cavaliers’ 21-0 shot advantage, Virginia had a 7-2 corner kick advantage. Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) did not need to make a save to record his fourth shutout of the season while Brandt Youmans made seven saves for Longwood.
“I was very encouraged by our start of the game tonight,” said Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch. “We came out strong and got the lead early, something we hadn’t done all season. We had a very disciplined and organized effort tonight and allowing no shots is a testament to that.”
Virginia concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday as it hosts NC State in the Cavaliers’ conference opener. Game time at Klockner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
