CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 13 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team closed out its non-conference portion of the season with a 9-0 win over Richmond at Klockner Stadium. Six different Cavaliers scored a goal in the game and the Virginia defense did not allow a shot.
The Cavaliers (5-2-1) were in control from the beginning, but several saves by Spider keeper Kelly Kolker kept the game scoreless midway through the first half. Virginia finally struck in the 26th minute when Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) played a cross from the end line that Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) one-timed in for the game’s first goal. Three minutes later, the Cavaliers scored again when Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) sent a long ball into the box that Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) flicked over the charging keeper into the net. In the 34th minute, Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) sent a cross along the mouth of the goal that Rostedt tapped in. Rostedt scored again a minute and a half later as she scored on a breakaway after give-and-go passes from with Huffman. Virginia took that 4-0 advantage into halftime, outshooting the Spiders 13-0, with all 13 Cavalier shots going on goal.
In the second half, the Cavaliers continued their offensive attack. In the 53rd minute, Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) scored her first career goal as she one-timed a cross just inside the far post. Another Cavalier scored her first career goal in the 71st minute, as Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) collected a loose ball just outside the box and lifted a shot over the Richmond keeper into the far side netting. Thompson scored her second goal of the game as Fries sent her a through ball that Thompson collected and fired inside the far post in the 85th minute. Kara Frederick (Woodbridge, Va.) closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the final three minutes of play, as Fries added another assist, and Julia Falk (Clifton, Va.) assisted on both of the final two goals.
The Cavaliers outshot the Spiders 23-0 in the game, marking the second time this season Virginia has held an opponent without a shot (Rhode Island in the season opener). Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Laura Comeau (Lee, N.H.) each played a half in goal and did not need to make a save to combine for the shutout. Kolker made eight saves for Richmond in the first half while Kate Hudson made two saves in the second half for the Spiders (2-4-2).
The 9-0 win comes two days after Virginia defeated St. Bonaventure 7-1 on Friday. The 16 combined goals is the most the Cavaliers have ever scored in consecutive games (14 goals scored against Virginia Tech (6-1) and UMBC (8-1) in 1995).
“I am happy for our team and proud of how they finished their chances tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I was a little concerned after we didn’t score on those first five or six quality chances early on, but we were patient and kept creating chances. That first half was the best we have played this season and hopefully this gives us some momentum going into the ACC season this week.”
The Cavaliers open the ACC season on Thursday, September 22 as they visit No. 15 Wake Forest.
