Today’s Game: The Cavaliers open the ACC season Thursday as they visit No. 15 Wake Forest. Virginia is coming off a pair of wins last weekend in the final non-conference games of the season, downing St. Bonaventure 7-1 and Richmond 9-0. The Demon Deacons are coming off a 1-0 win at UNC-Greensboro last weekend.

The Series: This is the 12th all-time meeting between the schools with Virginia holding a 7-3-1 advantage in the series. Virginia hasn’t beaten Wake Forest since a 2-1 win at Spry Stadium in 2002. Last season, the Demon Deacons came from behind for a 2-1 overtime win over the Cavaliers at Spry Stadium.

ACC Openers: The Cavaliers enter Thursday’s ACC opener with a 10-7-1 all-time record in ACC openers. This season marks the 10th time in the last 11 seasons that Virginia has opened the conference season on the road. Opening on the road so many times recently hasn’t hindered the Cavaliers, who have a 7-2 record over the past decade in ACC openers away from home.

Offensive Explosion: Last weekend, the Cavalier offense exploded in a pair of wins over St. Bonaventure (7-1) and Richmond (9-0). The 16 combined goals scored marks the most the Cavaliers have ever scored in consecutive games. The previous record was 14 goals in wins over Virginia Tech (6-1) and UMBC (8-0) in 1995. The nine goals scored against Richmond is tied for third most in a game in school history as the nine goal plateau had not been reached since 1994.
