CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head softball coach Karen Johns has named fourth-years Jackie Greer (Portage, Mich,/Portage Northern), Erin Horn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon), Sara Larquier (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs), and Jessica Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Academy) captains of the 2006 softball team. All four players have been starters and significant contributors throughout their careers at Virginia.
Greer, an outstanding defensive outfielder, has been a starter in both right and center field for the Cavaliers the last two years after red-shirting her freshman season in 2003. She has started 85 games in the outfield and played in 111 contests overall. In 2005, Greer started 53 of 63 games, including 41 contests in center field. Greer led the team with five hit by pitches and was third with 13 walks while hitting .140.
Horn has been a key pitcher for UVa the last three seasons. She has a 48-32 overall record with a 2.44 ERA. Horn shares the school record with five career saves. Horn is sixth all-time at UVa with her 48 wins, fourth in strikeouts (486), seventh in innings pitched (504.1) and complete games (44), tied for seventh in shutouts (9), and eighth in games started (66). In 2005, Horn was 14-9 with two saves and a career-low 2.26 ERA. She garnered VaSID All-State First Team honors in 2004 after posting a 17-11 record in the circle.
Larquier, a third baseman, is a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer and was named the 2005 ACC Player of the Year. She captured Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Third Team All-America accolades in 2004 after earning first-team All-Southeast Region honors. The two-time VaSID State Player of the Year is hitting .354 (209-590) in her career and has started 188 of the 189 games she has appeared in. Larquier’s .354 career batting average ranks fourth all-time at Virginia and she currently holds the school record with a .629 slugging percentage and her 93 extra base hits are one shy of the school record. She is second all-time at UVa in home runs (27), RBI (154), and doubles (51). Larquier also ranks fifth in hits (209), triples (15), and eighth in runs (102).
Taylor has started 177 games in the outfield her first three seasons as a Cavalier. In 2005, Taylor was UVa’s starting right fielder for the final 44 games of the season after starting the first 19 contests in center field. Taylor garnered second-team All-ACC honors and was also a first-team VaSID All-State selection for her play in 2005. She hit .309 with a career-best 63 hits in 204 at-bats. Taylor also established career highs with 35 runs scored and 86 total bases last season. She is ninth in stolen bases at UVa with 37 and is hitting .297 (153-515) in her career.
The Cavaliers begin their fall season on October 15 with a doubleheader against George Mason. The twinbill is tentatively scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
