DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 11 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team scored it second consecutive 1-0 win to open the ACC season, downing No. 7 Duke Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) scored the game’s lone goal as Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) tied the school record with her 17th career shutout.
The Cavaliers (7-2-1, 2-0-0 ACC) and Blue Devils (7-1-1, 1-1-0 ACC) played a scoreless first half with only six shots taken, four by Duke and two by Virginia. Early in the second half, the Cavaliers struck for the game’s only goal. Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) sent a ball over the Blue Devil defense that Rostedt ran onto, dribbled around Duke keeper Allison Lipsher, and sent the ball into the net for her fifth goal of the season.
The Cavaliers outshot Duke 8-6 in the contest. Virginia goalkeeper Christina de Vries made two saves to record her fourth shutout of the season and the 17th shutout of her career. Those 17 career shutouts tie the Virginia school record held by Sandra Kwitnieski (89-92) and Anne Abernethy (01-03). The shutout was also the third consecutive shutout by the Cavaliers who now have a shutout streak of 303 minutes.
“Today was a very competitive game,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I was pleased with the way we played, especially in the second half. As the game went on, we got better. We played with a lot of character and heart and that is what got us the result.”
The Cavaliers will return home for their first ACC home game at Klockner Stadium on Thursday as they host No. 9 Florida State. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
