Christina de Vries Named ACC Player of the Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia women’s soccer goalkeeper Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Last week, de Vries had two shutouts as the Cavaliers defeated Top 15 opponents Wake Forest and Duke on the road.
On Thursday, de Vries made four saves in Virginia’s 1-0 win at then No. 15 Wake Forest. She then had two saves on Sunday as the Cavaliers upset of then No. 7 Duke 1-0 in Durham. The shutout Sunday was the 17th of her career, tying the school record for career shutouts set by Sandra Kwitnieski (89-92) and Anne Abernethy (01-03). She also extended her personal shutout streak to 343 minutes.
The honor is the first of de Vries’ career and the first by a Cavalier this season.
No. 7 ranked Virginia (7-2-1, 2-0-0 ACC) returns home Thursday as they host No. 10 Florida State (8-1-0, 1-1-0 ACC) at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
