CHARLOTTESVILLE – Freshmen Jimmy Taranto and Nino DiMaggio scored their first career goals and No. 11 Virginia used three-second half goals in blanking Mount St. Mary’s, 4-0, Wednesday evening at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers improved to 6-1-1 on the season and picked up their sixth shutout of the year.
Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.) put Virginia on the board first in the 26th minute. After Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) blasted a shot from the top of box, which was deflected by Mount St. Mary’s goalkeeper Mark Murphy, Rosenbaum collected the rebound and knocked it in putting the Cavaliers ahead, 1-0.
Virginia scored three goals in the final 17 minutes of the game. Taranto (Wyckoff, N.J.) received a through ball from Ian Holder (Norfolk, Va.) which he chipped over the top of Murphy’s ahead extending the Cavalier lead to 2-0 at the 73:08 mark. Seven minutes later, DiMaggio (River Edge, N.J.) broke loose and blasted a shot from 15 yards out. Jeremy Barlow (Herndon, Va.) was credited with his fourth assist of the season as Virginia led, 3-0.
Senior Joe Vide (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up his first goal of the season in the 88th minute. He chased down a long pass from Will Hall (Shirley, N.Y.) and nailed a shot from 15 yards out to make it, 4-0.
Virginia outshot Mount St. Mary’s, 18-12. Both teams took three corner kicks. Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) picked up his sixth shutout of the season and collected four saves. Murphy recorded nine saves for Mount St. Mary’s.
The Cavaliers continue a three-game home-stand when Virginia hosts No. 2 North Carolina Saturday for an important Atlantic Coast Conference game. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
