CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team remained undefeated in the ACC with a 1-0 win over No. 10 Florida State Thursday night in front of 703 fans at Klockner Stadium. Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) scored the only goal the Cavaliers needed as Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) set the a new school record with her 18th career shutout.
The Cavaliers (8-2-1, 3-0-0 ACC) and Seminoles (8-2-0, 1-2-0 ACC) played a scoreless first half with few scoring chances by either team. The game remained scoreless until the 67th minute, when Rostedt scored her sixth goal of the season for the Cavaliers. After she made a run into the box, Rostedt had the ball deflected away by a Seminole defender. Rostedt collected the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot past FSU keeper Ali Mims into the far side netting. The Seminoles had a chance to tie the game in the final two minutes. Off of a corner kick, Kelly Rowland had a shot that was saved off the line by Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), and her rebound shot was saved by de Vries. With the ball still loose in the area, Viola Odebrecht’s shot was blocked by Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) before Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.) cleared the ball out of danger.
The win marked the first time the Cavaliers have ever defeated ranked opponents in three consecutive games, as they won at No. 15 Wake Forest and No. 7 Duke last week, also by 1-0 scores. The Cavalier defense also posted their fourth consecutive shutout and extended their scoreless streak to 393 minutes. Dating back to last season, Virginia has now won six consecutive ACC regular season games, posting a shutout in each contest.
The Cavaliers outshot Florida State 12-7 in the match and had a 6-3 corner kick advantage. Virginia goalkeeper Christina de Vries made two saves to record her fifth shutout of the season and her record 18th shutout of her career. Mims made four saves for the Seminoles.
“I think this was our most consistent effort thus far this season,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We are a young team and we need to keep learning and improving with each game. I felt we were pushing the issue and when we got that first goal, which was key. It gave us confidence and put some more pressure on them. They pressed us at the end, but I was pleased with how our defense played.”
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday when they host Miami at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
