CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Second-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and third-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) combined for 29 kills and a .434 hitting percentage to lead the University of Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 31-29) victory over Boston College in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action Friday night (September 30) at Memorial Gym. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, while Boston College falls to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Sarah Kirkwood tallied a team-high 16 kills while hitting .419. She also registered six digs, four blocks and three assists. Osco notched 13 kills with a .455 hitting percentage. Osco was also one of four Cavaliers with six digs. Second-year outside hitter Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursula Academy) recorded a match-best .467 hitting percentage with nine kills. She also added six digs and two blocks. Third-year outside hitter Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station, Tenn./Page), who started at middle for the Cavaliers, totaled a career-high 10 blocks, including one solo stuff. Her previous career-best was six blocks on two occasions. Perilli also had six digs, four kills and three assists.
Third-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) handed out a match-high 38 assists and also added five digs, three kills and two blocks. Second-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) led Virginia with nine digs and also recorded 20 service receptions without an error.
Abigail Hasebroock led the Eagles with a match-high 17 kills while hitting .400. Kelsey Johnson came off the bench to add seven kills. Hasebroock and Johnson both had two blocks. Setter Verena Rost dished out 29 assists, while Allison Anderson recorded 10 digs for Boston College.
The Cavaliers hit .352 as a team, their highest hitting percentage in an ACC match this season. Boston College hit only .118 and UVa also held a 52-41 edge in kills. Virginia equaled its season high with 12 team blocks while the Eagles had four. The Cavaliers held a 43-32 advantage in digs and a 4-1 edge in service aces.
UVa never trailed in winning the first game 30-17. The Cavaliers hit .500 in the opening game with 14 kills and just one hitting error. BC led 23-21 in the second game, but UVa then ran off six consecutive points and took a 30-24 decision. The Eagles led much of the third game, but Virginia used a kill by Osco and a service ace by second-year defensive specialist Taylor Russo (Tampa, Fla./Plant) to break a 25-25 tied and grab a 27-25 edge. UVa eventually won 31-29 with a kill by Perilli and block assists by third-year middle Stephanie Everett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Perilli to close out the match.
Virginia continues its five-match homestand Saturday (October 1) with a 5:00 p.m. contest at Memorial Gym against Maryland. The Terps are currently 13-0 on the season and lead the ACC with a 4-0 mark.
