CHARLOTTESVILLE – Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) and Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) each scored a goal and No. 11 Virginia picked up its seventh shutout of the season as the Cavaliers defeated No. 2 North Carolina, 2-0, Saturday night in front of 3,104 fans at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (7-1-1, 3-0-0 ACC) remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference and gave head coach George Gelnovatch his 150th career win.
Virginia continued its streak in Charlottesville over the Tar Heels (7-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) who have not won in Charlottesville since 1977 and not registered a goal in Klockner Stadium since the 1999 season.
Cristman’s seventh goal of the season gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead at the 50:58 mark. He collected a loose ball at the top of the box and blasted a shot past a diving UNC goalkeeper Ford Williams from 20 yards out.
Reyering extended the Cavalier lead to 2-0 in the 73rd minute. After Joe Vide (Raleigh, N.C.) sent a long pass down the left side, Williams came out of goal to make a play on the ball with Cristman running on. Cristman slipped by Williams and sent a cross into the box which Reyering tapped in for his sixth goal of the season.
The teams played a scoreless first half. Virginia took four shots on goal in the first two minutes of the game. Reyering, Jeremy Barlow (Herndon, Va.), Cristman and Vide each had chances but Williams recorded three saves in the sequence.
Virginia outshot North Carolina, 13-9. North Carolina held the advantage on corner kicks, 8-4. Williams finished with four saves and Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) picked up three saves.
The Cavaliers will wrap up their three-game homestand Wednesday when they host Monmouth at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.
