WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team closed play Sunday at the Deacon Classic at Wake Forest. The Cavaliers headlined the play on the final day by winning two of the three singles flights and both of the doubles flights.
In singles Flight A, second-year Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) took home the title, defeating Jenna Loeb of Wake Forest in Sunday’s final, 7-6, 6-4. First-year Hampton Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) took home the Flight C title as she scored a straight set win over Ashlee Vosters of Richmond in the final Sunday. In singles Flight B, second-year Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) won the third place match over teammate Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) in three sets. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) won the fifth place match in the flight, defeating Ashley Lipton of Syracuse in a super-breaker.
In doubles Flight A, the team of DelPriore and Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) took home the title with an 8-5 win over Christine Simpson and Sierra Poske of Wake Forest. It was an All-Virginia final in Flight B of doubles as Pereira and Hammond defeated Williams and Lara Alexander (London, England) 8-6 in Sunday’s final.
“Overall, it was a very good weekend of competition for this team,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “Almost all of the players showed great progress since our first tournament two weeks ago, especially in the specific areas of serving and doubles. We have many positives to continue to work on and we are quickly learning to compete a bit harder and longer. It is great to see this team gain a greater appreciation for a consistently stronger effort and a very intelligent implementation of strategies and game plans. Each of the players had some good performances. It was a great weekend for Rachel winning top flight singles and doubles with Douglas. Rachel had many stretches of very, very high level tennis. Hampton Williams also performed extremely well and earned the third flight singles title. Her progress is impressive and I was pleased to see her win her first collegiate title.”
