CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia women’s soccer forward Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Last week, Rostedt helped lead the Cavaliers to wins over Florida State and Miami.
On Thursday, Rostedt scored the lone goal of Virginia’s 1-0 win against No. 10 Florida State. In the 67th minute, she collected a ball outside the box and blasted a shot from 20 yards out over the Seminole keeper and into the far side netting for her sixth goal of the season. On Sunday, Rostedt assisted on Sarah Curtis’ (Yellow Springs, Ohio) goal in the 1-0 win over Miami. Rostedt dribbled though several Miami defenders before threading a through ball in behind the Hurricane defense to an on-running Curtis, who slid the ball past the diving keeper.
The honor is the first of Rostedt’s career, as a Cavalier earns the honor for the second consecutive week. Last week, goalkeeper Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) took ACC Player of the Week honors. It marks the first time that the Cavaliers have been honored in consecutive weeks since 2002, when Darci Borski won the award two weeks in a row. Rostedt’s honor is also part of a weekly sweep of soccer player of the week honors by the Cavaliers, as goalkeeper Ryan Burke was named the ACC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.
The Cavaliers (9-2-1, 4-0-0) moved up to No. 5 in this week’s rankings, and will return to action on Thursday when they meet top-ranked North Carolina (12-0-0, 4-0-0) in Chapel Hill. Game time at Fetzer Field is 7:00 p.m.
