TULSA, Okla. – Three Cavaliers advanced in singles during the first day of the 2005 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Jarrett Chirico (Sarasota, Fla.), Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) all advanced on the first day of the qualifying draw.
Chirico, ranked No. 125 nationally, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 first round win over Artis Burmistrau of Oklahoma State. He will meet Niklas Persson of Denver in the second round. Huey, ranked No. 122 nationally, also advanced easily on Monday, topping Amanjot Singh of Louisiana-Lafayette 6-1, 6-2. Huey will meet No. 91 Brett Ross of Wake Forest in the second round. Miklo, ranked No. 61 nationally, defeated Brandon Allan of Middle Tennessee 6-3, 6-4. Miklo will meet Peter Bjork of Colorado in the second round.
Chirico, Huey, and Miklo are trying to advance to the main draw of the tournament, which begins later in the week. Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India), Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) are already in the main draw.
The doubles qualifying draw begins on Tuesday with the teams of Rizza and Eric Riley (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Chirico and Miklo competing. Rizza and Riley meet Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow of BYU, and Miklo and Chirico meet Ivan Bjelica and Philippe Frayssinoux of Mississippi State. The team of Devvarman and Huey are already in the main draw.
