CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team kicks off the newly formed Commonwealth Challenge Tuesday (October 4) with a 7:00 p.m. match against Virginia Tech in Memorial Gym. The winner of the match will capture the traveling plaque for volleyball and also earn .5 points in the overall series. Admission to the match is free of charge. Free Commonwealth Challenge posters will be available at the match.
The Commonwealth Challenge, presented by Adelphia, is a friendly comprehensive rivalry series between the two school’s athletics programs on an annual basis that continues the growing relationship between the two in-state members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. With Adelphia’s support, it is designed to increase the exposure and interest level in the various sports, while promoting good sportsmanship among student-athletes, coaches and fans of the schools. A point system determines the annual winner of the competition.
Virginia stands at 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. The Cavaliers split a pair of home ACC matches over the weekend. UVa posted a 3-0 victory over Boston College on Friday (September 30), but fell to undefeated Maryland 3-2 on Saturday (October 1). Virginia Tech also stands at 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. The Hokies began last weekend with a 3-0 loss to Maryland and also recorded a 3-0 win over Boston College.
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series with Virginia Tech 24-20. UVa has won the last two matchups in the series and nine of the past 10. Virginia registered a 3-1 (35-33, 30-18, 24-30, 31-29) victory last season (October 30) at Memorial Gym in the last meeting between the two schools. UVa has won the last six meetings between the two schools in Charlottesville.
The two-match volleyball series between the two schools totals one point in the Commonwealth Challenge with the winner of each match garnering .5 points. The second volleyball match of the series takes place in Blacksburg on November 1 at 7:00 p.m.
