Today’s Game: The Cavaliers look for their first ever win against the Tar Heels as they visit Fetzer Field on Thursday. The teams enter the match tied for first in the ACC, each with 4-0-0 records. Virginia has a six game winning streak, the last five wins coming by shutout. North Carolina is 12-0-0 on the year and is one of three remaining undefeated/untied teams in the nation.
The Series: This is the 30th all-time meeting between the schools with the Tar Heels holding a 28-0-1 advantage in the series. North Carolina won the first 28 games of the series, including a 2-1 win in the regular season meeting last year at Fetzer Field. In the last meeting between the teams, the Cavaliers and Tar Heels played to a 1-1 in the 2004 ACC Final at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers won their first ACC Championship by defeating the Tar Heels 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout and ended UNC’s 15-year reign as ACC Champs.
Strong ACC Start: The Cavaliers are 4-0 to open the ACC season for only the first time in school history. Previously, the best starts to a conference season for the Cavaliers came in 1998 and 1999 when UVa started 3-0 in the ACC.
ACC Streak: Dating back to last season, the Cavaliers have won their last seven regular season ACC contests, outscoring opponents 12-0 in those games. That streak is the longest ACC regular season winning streak in school history, breaking the old record of six set in 2002-03 (final four games of 2002, first two games of 2003).
