No. 6 Cavalier Men’s Soccer Heads to Clemson for ACC Game Friday

THE MATCH-UP: No. 6 Virginia looks to remain undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference play when the Cavaliers travel to Clemson. UVA is coming off a 2-2 tie at home against Monmouth Wednesday evening. Clemson defeated Jacksonville, 7-1. Third-year forward Adam Cristman leads the team with 17 points. Cristman is tied with first-year forward Yannick Reyering for the team lead in goals (7). Reyering ranks second on the team with 15 points. Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke has posted a 0.77 goals against averaged and continues to lead the conference with seven shutouts. As a team, the Cavaliers are averaging 2.11 goals per game and 14.7 shots. Clemson is led by junior forward Dane Richards, who has four goals, three assists and 11 points. Senior midfielder Justin Moore has assisted on five goals. Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi is 1-2-1 with a 1.26 GAA and 39 saves.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE CAVALIERS: Yannick Reyering and Jeremy Barlow each scored one goal as No. 6 Virginia battled Monmouth to a 2-2 tie in double overtime Wednesday evening at Klockner Stadium in nonconference men’s soccer action. In overtime, the Cavaliers outshot Monmouth, 5-0. Both teams attempted two corner kicks. Virginia outshot Monmouth 19-9 and held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks in the game. Art Satterwhite made four saves for the Hawks while Ryan Burke recorded three saves for the Cavaliers.

ABOUT CLEMSON: The Tigers (5-3-1, 0-3-0 ACC) will be looking for their first ACC win. Clemson has dropped ACC games to Maryland (0-3), North Carolina (0-1) and NC State (1-2). The Tigers are coming off a 7-1 win over Jacksonville Tuesday night. Bryson Moore scored two goals while Justin Moore also had three assists in the match. The Tigers outshot the Dolphins 19-6.

The Series vs. CLEMSON: Virginia leads the series with the Tigers, 21-18-5. The Cavaliers shut out Clemson, 2-0, last season in Clemson. Nico Colaluca and Chris Tierney each scored a goal in the game. Virginia is 2-0-1 against the Tigers the teams’ last three meetings. The Tigers last defeated Virginia during the 2002 season, 3-2, in overtime in Clemson.

BURKE EARNS WEEKLY HONORS: Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after his performance against Mount St. Mary’s and No. 2 North Carolina. Burke posted back-to-back shutouts last week at home as UVa defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 4-0, and the Tar Heels, 2-0. Burke was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. On the season, Burke has posted an ACC league leading seven shutouts while also ranking third in the conference with a 0.65 GAA.
