CLEMSON, S.C. – First-year forward Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) found the back of the net off an assist from Will Hall (Shirley, N.Y.) in the 104th minute as No. 6 Virginia held off Clemson, 1-0, in double overtime Friday night at Riggs Field in front of 1,110 fans. The Cavaliers (8-1-2, 4-0-0 ACC) remained unbeaten in the conference while Clemson fell to 5-4-1 and 0-4-0 in ACC.
Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) recorded his ACC league-leading eighth shutout of the season. He finished the game with four saves.
Reyering scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season to keep the Cavaliers unbeaten streak alive. After Clemson was whistled for a foul, Nico Colaluca (Coventry, R.I.) took the restart which was cleared back out to Hall. Hall sent a ball into the box which found Reyering on the backside. Reyering beat a Clemson defender and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He knocked in the game-winning goal far post for the Cavaliers.
Clemson took the only shot on goal in the first overtime period as the teams played to another draw.
The teams played a scoreless second half as the Tigers rallied to out-shoot the Cavaliers, 10-3, in the half. Joe Vide had an opportunity to give Virginia the lead when Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) tapped back a pass that Vide sailed just high in the 57th minute.
Clemson’s Dane Richards broke loose in the 87th minute. He hit a shot that Burke make a diving save on to keep the game scoreless.
Clemson was forced to play a man down in the from the 31st minute after having two yellow cards issued to one of its defenders. Virginia outshot the Tigers, 5-3, in the half.
For the game, Clemson outshot UVA 15-11, with the only shot in overtime for the Cavaliers coming on Reyering’s goal. Clemson held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi recorded five saves for the Tigers.
Virginia returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 12, when the Cavaliers host St. Francis (NY) at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.
