Today’s Game: The Cavaliers return home on Sunday as they host Clemson. Virginia had its six-game win streak snapped on Thursday with a 2-1 double overtime loss to top-ranked North Carolina. Clemson picked up its first ACC win of the season on Thursday with a 1-0 home win over Virginia Tech.
The Series: This is the 16th all-time meeting between the schools with Clemson holding a 10-5-0 advantage in the series. The Cavaliers swept the two meetings between the schools last year, winning 2-0 in Charlottesville and 2-1 at the ACC Tournament. The regular season win by the Cavaliers last year snapped Clemson’s seven-game win streak in the series.
Strong ACC Start: The Cavaliers opened the ACC season 4-0 for only the first time in school history. Previously, the best starts to a conference season for the Cavaliers came in 1998 and 1999 when UVa started 3-0 in the ACC. With a win on Sunday, Virginia would be 5-1 in the ACC for the first time since 1998.
Impressive Performance in Goal: Goalkeeper Christina de Vries had a career-high 14 saves in Thursday’s game at North Carolina. The 14 saves was the most by a Cavalier goalkeeper since 1987 when Shelley Shreve set the school record with 22 saves in a game against NC State. The 14 save performance is tied for the third best in school history.
