THE MATCH-UP: No. 4 Virginia looks to remain undefeated at home when the Cavaliers host St. Francis (NY). Virginia is coming off a 1-0 double overtime win at Clemson last Friday to remain perfect in Atlantic Coast Conference play. First-year forward Yannick Reyering and third-year forward Adam Cristman are tied for the team lead with 17 points each. Reyering leads the team with eight goals while Cristman has added seven goals. Jeremy Barlow and Chris Tierney are both tied for the team lead with five assists each. Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke has posted a 0.69 goals against average and continues to lead the conference with eight shutouts. As a team, the Cavaliers are averaging 1.98 goals per game and 14.4 shots. St. Francis is led Peter Ramirez, who has scored five goals on the season and tallied 10 points. Goalkeepers Afrim Lajqi and and Rosario Candela have shared time in goal for the Terriers. Candela is allowing 2.17 goals while recorded 11 saves. Lajqi has posted a 1.32 GAA with 24 saves.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE CAVALIERS: First-year forward Yannick Reyering found the back of the net off an assist from Will Hall in the 104th minute as No. 6 Virginia held off Clemson, 1-0, in double overtime at Riggs Field in front of 1,110 fans. The Cavaliers (8-1-2, 4-0-0 ACC) remained unbeaten in the conference while Clemson fell to 5-4-1 and 0-4-0 in ACC. Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke recorded his ACC league-leading eighth shutout of the season. He finished the game with four saves. For the game, Clemson outshot UVA 15-11, with the only shot in overtime for the Cavaliers coming on Reyering’s goal. Clemson held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
ABOUT ST. FRANCIS (NY): The Terriers suffered a 1-0 setback at Monmouth Monday in a game that was postponed Sunday due to wet field conditions. St. Francis fell to Mount St, Mary’s, 3-2, prior to the Monmouth game. St. Francis (NY) has gone to overtime in three of its past five matches. Senior forward Peter Ramirez is tied for third in the NEC with five goals.
THE SERIES AGAINST ST. FRANCIS (NY): Virginia leads the series with the Terriers, 1-0-0. The Cavaliers defeated St. Francis, 3-1, last season in Charlottesville. Jeff Tuman, David Rosenbaum and Chris Tierney each scored a goal in the win. Virginia plays its third game of the season against a member of the Northeast Conference. UVA is 1-0-1 against the conference with a win over Mount St. Mary’s and a tie with Monmouth.
IN THE RANKINGS: The Cavaliers are ranked No. 7 by the NSCAA, No. 4 by Soccer America, No. 7 by College Soccer News, and No. 3 by Soccer Times in the current national rankings.
HIGH RANKINGS: The Cavaliers’ No. 4 ranking in the current Soccer America poll marks the 20th consecutive week Virginia has been ranked in the poll. Only four schools (Indiana, Santa Clara, UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara) have longer current streaks.
