TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Second-year outside hitter Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursula Academy) recorded a career-high 19 kills and second-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) added 18 kills to lead the University of Virginia volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-23, 23-30, 30-24, 30-18) win over Florida State Saturday evening (October 15) at Tully Gym. The victory was the Cavaliers’ school record fifth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference win, which improved UVa’s season record to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the ACC. Florida State falls to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Virginia began its current five-match winning streak with a 3-0 home win over Virginia Tech on October 4. UVa has reeled off four straight 3-1 wins over Duke, Wake Forest, Miami and now Florida State.
Shelton slammed her career-high 19 kills on 37 attempts with only four errors for an impressive .405 hitting percentage. Shelton also tied second-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) for team-high honors in digs with 17. Shelton also had two assists, two service aces and two blocks. Sarah Kirkwood posted a .366 hitting percentage with her 18 kills on 41 attempts, and also had eight digs. Second-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va./Evangel Christian School) rounded out UVa’s players in double figures in kills with 11. She also totaled three blocks, including two solo stuffs.
Third-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) dished out 54 assists and also contributed eight digs, two service aces and a kill. Third-year outside hitter Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station, Tenn./Page) was the third Cavalier to reach double figures in digs with 13.
Lauren Scott and Maria Royster-Crockett led Florida State with 11 kills apiece. Setter Jessica Skower recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs. Summer Weissing led all players with 23 digs.
The Cavaliers held a 63-49 advantage in kills and out-hit FSU .247 to .157. UVa also held a 77-67 edge in digs and an 8-4 advantage in service aces. The Seminoles held a 13-6 lead in team blocks.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, October 21 when it travels to Clemson for a 7:00 p.m. match.
