CHARLOTTESVILLE – Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) recorded his ninth shutout of the season and first-year forward Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) provided the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift No. 4 Virginia over No. 10 Duke, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (10-1-2, 5-0-0 ACC) remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference and stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games. Duke dropped to 8-3-1 and 2-2-1 in ACC play.
“I felt that we deserved to win the game today. It was arguably one of our best performances from start to finish,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “Our finishing earlier could have been better, but we knew it was a matter of time before we scored one. I was very pleased with our performance.”
Reyering notched his 10th goal of the season. After Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) sent a long ball into the box, Adam Cristman got tangled up with some Duke defenders. From the ground, Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) tapped back a pass to Reyering, who drilled a shot into the back of the net for the game-winner. Cristman was credited with his fourth assist.
Each team had scoring opportunities in the first half. Reyering found himself 1-on-1 with Duke goalkeeper Justin Papadakis. Papakadis made a diving save to preserve a goal in the 14th minute. One minute later, Cristman and Reyering found themselves on a 2-on-1 inside the box. Cristman’s pass back to Reyering was deflected backwards in the 15th minute.
Duke had a chance in the 19th minute when Michael Videira hit the post with a shot from the right side. UVa’s Jeremy Barlow (Herndon, Va.) hit the crossbar with a shot in the 24th minute.
The Blue Devils out-shot the Cavaliers in the game, 11-9, while Duke held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Burke finished the game with three saves while Papadakis also registered three saves for the Blue Devils.
Virginia returns to action Wednesday when the Cavaliers travel to College Park, Md., to take on Maryland. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
