GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following Saturday’s upset of No. 4/5 Florida State, three Virginia football players earned ACC Player of the Week accolades, the conference announced on Monday.
Senior quarterback Marques Hagans (Hampton, Va.) earned Offensive Back of the Week honors. Senior kicker Connor Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.) was named the Specialist of the Week, while junior linebacker Kai Parham (Virginia Beach, Va.) captured the Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.
Against the Seminoles, Hagans went 27-of-36 for 306 yards and two touchdowns. The yardage, completions and attempts are all new career highs. The win also marked the fifth time in Hagans’ career that he completed at least 75 percent of his passes (and the first time this season). He also didn’t throw any interceptions despite a fierce rush all game. The quarterback also helped the UVa rushers with nine carries. Virginia also averaged almost 5 yards per play.
The ACC honor is the second in Hagans’ UVa career and first honor this season.
Hughes had another perfect game in Virginia’s 26-21 upset win over No. 4/5 Florida State. The kicker connected on four field goals and two extra points. His longest kick of the day was a season-best 50-yarder to put UVa ahead 10-7. His 14 points were the difference in UVa’s five-point win. His four field goals tied him for the most career field goals in school history with 58. Hughes also now has 291 points in his career, 14th in ACC history. He needs just two points to eclipse Gene Mayer’s (1912-15) school record, which is the oldest in the UVa record book.
The ACC honor is the fifth in Hughes’ UVa career and second honor this season.
Parham led UVa with nine tackles, four of which were solo tackles. He also had two tackles for loss, a sack, a break-up, and two quarterback hurries. His sack in the second quarter was his seventh on the season, tying for the sixth most in one season by a UVa linebacker.
The ACC honor is the fourth in Parham’s UVa career and third honor this season.
The No. 23/24 Virginia Cavaliers (4-2, 2-2 ACC) travel to North Carolina (2-3, 1-1 ACC) on Oct. 22 for a Noon game. Jefferson Pilot/Raycom will televise the game.
