THE MATCH-UP: No. 2 Virginia hits the road to face its second 2004 NCAA College Cup participant when the Cavaliers head to College Park to take on No. 6 Maryland Wednesday. UVa looks to remain undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia is the only unbeaten team left in the ACC. A win at Maryland could lock up the No. 1 seed in next month’s ACC Tournament. Virginia is coming off a 1-0 win over Duke Sunday. First-year forward Yannick Reyering added his 10th goal of the season in the win. Reyering continues to lead the team with 21 points. Third-year forward Adam Cristman has 18 points including seven goals and four assists. He had the game-winning assist against Duke. Jeremy Barlow leads the Cavaliers with seven assists. Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke has posted a 0.66 goals against average and continues to lead the conference with nine shutouts. As a team, the Cavaliers are averaging 1.91 goals per game and 14.6 shots. Maryland is led by forward Jason Garey who is tied for the ACC lead with 13 goals. He has 29 points on the season. Stephen King has seven goals and six assists for the Terrapins.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE CAVALIERS: Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) recorded his ninth shutout of the season and first-year forward Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) provided the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift No. 4 Virginia over No. 10 Duke, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (10-1-2, 5-0-0 ACC) remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference and stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games. Duke dropped to 8-3-1 and 2-2-1 in ACC play. Reyering notched his 10th goal of the season. After Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) sent a long ball into the box, Adam Cristman got tangled up with some Duke defenders. From the ground, Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) tapped back a pass to Reyering, who drilled a shot into the back of the net for the game-winner. Cristman was credited with his fourth assist.
ABOUT MARYLAND: The Terrapins (10-3-0, 4-1-0 ACC) are riding a five-game winning streak after downing Georgetown, 6-0, and North Carolina, 4-1, in their last two outings. Maryland has outscored its last five opponents, 17-3, which includes ACC wins over Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Jason Garey has a goal in the last three games. He is tied for the ACC lead with 13 goals while solely leading the conference with 29 points. Chris Seitz and Craig Salvati have split time in goal for the Terrapins. Seitz has held opponents to a 0.63 GAA while picking up 24 saves. He is 6-1 on the season with two shutouts. A.J. Godbolt is the team’s assist leader with nine. Maryland is averaging 2.77 goals per game and 14.1 shots. The defense has a 0.77 GAA.
THE SERIES vs. MARYLAND: Virginia and Maryland have met 64 times on the soccer field. The Terrapins lead the series with the Cavaliers, 32-25-7. The teams met twice last season with Maryland winning the first meeting, 2-1 in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers defeated the Terrapins in the ACC Tournament Championship game, 2-1.
REYERING EARNS WEEKLY HONORS: Virginia’s Yannick Reyering has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after scoring a pair of goals in leading the Cavaliers to a perfect 2-0-0 week. Reyering was also named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Reyering kept Virginia perfect in league play notching the game-winner in the 88th minute of action as the Cavaliers downed Duke 1-0. The freshman forward took a pass from Adam Cristman and found the back of the net from 12 yards out for the win. Against St. Francis, N.Y., the Mettingen, Germany native scored the game’s first goal eight minutes into the match as Virginia posted a 2-1 victory. For the season, Reyering leads the team with 10 goals and 21 points.
IN THE RANKINGS: The Cavaliers are ranked No. 4 by the NSCAA, No. 2 by Soccer America, No. 3 by College Soccer News, and No. 2 by Soccer Times in the current national rankings. The Terrapins are ranked No. 2 in the College Soccer News Top-30, No. 4 by Soccer Times and No. 6 in the Soccer America Top-25. Maryland is No. 8 in the NSCAA/adidas National Poll.
HIGH RANKINGS: The Cavaliers’ No. 2 ranking in the current Soccer America poll marks the 21st consecutive week Virginia has been ranked in the poll. Only four schools (Indiana, Santa Clara, UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara) have longer current streaks.
