CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team has elected Tiffany Sardin, Siedah Williams, and Sharneé Zoll as captains for the 2005-06 season.
A senior from Chicago, Ill., Sardin enter her third season as a team captain. The lone senior on this year’s squad, the 6-1 forward played in every game with nine starts a year ago. Sharing the team’s Unsung Hero, Sardin paced UVa with a career-high 21 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, against No. 4/3 North Carolina in the ACC Tournament semifinal en route to Aeropostale Player of the Game and ACC All-Tournament Team honors.
A junior from Cleveland, Ohio, Williams also shared team’s Unsung Hero award last season. She played in 30 games with two starts while shooting a team-best 51 percent from the field. The 6-2 center provided a huge spark off the bench, grabbing two rebounds and blocking a shot in the win over Old Dominion in the NCAA Tournament first round.
A sophomore from Marlboro, N.J., Zoll was named to the ACC Honorable Mention All-Freshman Team. She earned team’s Rookie of the Year, Best Player in Practice, and Preseason Conditioning awards after playing in all 32 games with 31 starts. Zoll set the season assists record for a freshman which was previously held by All-American Dawn Staley (144, 1989) and paced UVa with a career-high 20 points against No. 12 Minnesota in the NCAA Tournament second round. During the summer, the 5-7 point guard also won a gold medal with USA Basketball at the FIBA Women’s U19 World Championship with a perfect 9-0 record.
Virginia will host an exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in University Hall against the E.A. Sports, an all-star team of former collegiate players. Admission to the event is free to the public.
Virginia opens the season at George Washington on Friday, Nov. 18. UVa’s home opener is set for Sunday, Nov. 20 with Wright State.
