CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) and Nico Colaluca (Coventry, R.I.) each scored a goal and third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) pitched his 10th shutout of the season as No. 2 Virginia knocked off Liberty, 2-0, Saturday night at Klockner Stadium in nonconference men’s soccer action. The Cavaliers improved to 11-2-2 overall while Liberty fell to 4-6-2 on the season.
“I was happy with the response from the team after Wednesday night’s setback at Maryland,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “Our energy was great right off the bat. We were able to get some new players into the line-up and try some other players at new positions. I was happy with the result. Now, we’re going to shift our focus and start getting ready for a big game with Virginia Tech next weekend.”
Burke finished the game with four saves. He now needs one shutout to tie the single-season school record. Liberty goalkeeper Kevin Mahan turned in a good performance for the Flames. Mahan recorded 10 saves despite allowing the two goals in 90 minutes.
Virginia put pressure on the Flames early in the first half. The Cavaliers out-shot the Flames, 10-4, in the first half.
Reyering scored the game’s first goal at the 35:24 mark. Jeremy Barlow (Herndon, Va.) fired a shot that Mahan blocked out. Reyering gathered the loose ball and knocked it in for his eighth goal of the season putting UVa ahead, 1-0. Barlow was credited with the assist.
The Cavaliers had several chances in the second half out-shooting the Flames, 17-3. Colaluca added UVa’s second goal in the 59th minute. Barlow sent a cross backside. Colaluca side-swiped a shot far post for his first goal of the season. Barlow earned his team-leading ninth assist.
Liberty tried to cut into the lead in the 60th minute. Burke came out of goal to deflect a shot. Liberty’s Dan Garber gathered the deflection and took a shot. Matt Poole (Reston, Va.) made a team save for the Cavaliers to help preserve the shutout.
For the game, the Cavaliers out-shot Liberty, 27-7 and held a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Virginia takes the midweek off before returning to Klockner Stadium next Saturday to host in-state rival and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech in the third game of Adelphia’s Commonwealth Challenge. The game will be the second game of a doubleheader with the UVa women’s soccer team as it hosts NC State at 5 p.m. Liberty will host VMI Wednesday.
