CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 5 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team used two second-half goals to down Maryland 2-0 Sunday afternoon in front of 932 fans at Klockner Stadium. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 12-4-1 overall and 7-2-0 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers had the better of the chances in the first half, but game remained scoreless at halftime. Virginia finally struck in the 57th minute as Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) scored the game’s first goal. After a Terrapin foul on the flank just outside the box, Huffman placed the ensuing free kick just inside the far post. Eight minutes later, the Cavaliers added a second goal as Huffman fed Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio), who dribbled to the top of the box and fired a shot past Maryland keeper Nikki Resnick for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Overall, Virginia outshot Maryland 19-7 in the game, including 13-3 in the second half, and had an 8-3 corner kick advantage. In goal, Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made three saves, including two late, to post her seventh shutout of the season. Resnick made seven saves in net for Maryland, who fell to 4-10-3 overall, 2-5-2 in the ACC.
“This was a good win for us,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We had some good chances in the first 15 minutes but then lost our rhythm and had to regroup at halftime. They are well organized, but I thought we began to wear them down and it was only a matter of time before we got one. Once we got the first goal, I think we settled down even more and began to move the ball much better.”
The Cavaliers close out the regular season on Saturday, October 29 when they host NC State at 5:00 p.m. The game is the first of a soccer doubleheader at Klockner Stadium as the Cavalier men host Virginia Tech in the second game.
