Virginia head women’s lacrosse coach Julie Myers has announced the Cavaliers’ 2006 lacrosse schedule. The slate features eight games against teams that advanced to the 2005 NCAA tournament, including fellow NCAA semifinalist Duke. In addition, the 2006 schedule features new ACC member Boston College, who the Cavaliers will play for the first time since 1994.
“We’ve had a great fall, playing five dates against top-level competition, and it has been a fantastic opportunity for us to get our feet wet as we welcome nine newcomers to the team,” said Myers. “Playing top teams like Northwestern, Princeton, UNC and others has helped us get ready for the spring.
“We open earlier than usual in 2006, and with the moving of the final weekend to Memorial Day weekend, we hope to extend our season later than ever before as well,” said Myers. “It is our traditional schedule, with one major exception-we welcome Boston College to the ACC. It’s the first time we have played them in a while, and they will add a nice dimension to our schedule.”
Virginia opens up on the road against Vanderbilt on February 19, the earliest opening date in school history. The Commodores of the American Lacrosse Conference were ranked #19 in the final IWLCA poll in 2005.
The Cavaliers feature seven home dates, including ACC rivals Boston College and UNC, as well as in-state rivals JMU, ODU and George Mason. In addition, Virginia will travel to play six teams ranked in the final poll of 2005, including closing the regular season against 2004 semifinalist Georgetown, who closed out 2005 ranked #4.
The ACC tournament, which will feature six teams for the first time in conference history, returns to Baltimore and M&T Bank Stadium.
“M&T Bank Stadium is a great venue,” said Myers. “It’s great for fans and it is a great way to promote our sport.”
Virginia opens up the home portion of their schedule with a game against perennial power Temple on February 26. The Cavaliers play their home games at Klockner Stadium.
In 2005 the Cavaliers advanced to the finals of the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year after capturing the national championship in 2004. The Hoos welcome back five starters from that game, including All-Americans Tyler Leachman, Nikki Lieb, Kim Connors and Meredith Lazarus.
