Orange Defeats Blue In Virginia Wrestling's Blue-Orange Exhibition, 24-13

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Damian Johnson registered the only technical fall of the match at 165 pounds to lead the Orange team past the Blue team, 24-13, in the annual Virginia wrestling program’s Blue-Orange Exhibition match Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym. The Orange squad won seven of the nine individual bouts.

The night started off with two matches I the 157 weight class that both resulted in victories for the Orange squad. Mikey Sewell recorded a 12-3 major decision over Jacob Siegel in the 157 weight class putting Orange ahead, 4-0. Kyle Artusio then registered a 3-2 win over Brian McReynolds in the other 157-pound battle putting Orange ahead, 7-0. Sewell and Kyle Artusio each advanced to the team scoring bouts at 157, respectively.

Anthony Burke put the first points on the board for the Blue team pulling them within 7-3 after posting a 7-3 win over Zach Anderson in the 125 weight class. Blue came within 7-6 when Eric Albright earned a decision over Ben Johnson at 133. In the only overtime match of the evening, Trevor Bowers defeated Nick Alparone, 6-5, in the third overtime period at 141-pounds giving Orange a 10-6 advantage. Drew DiPasquale then had a major decision over the Orange’s Danny Artusio, 21-12 at 149 pounds, tying the match, 10-10. But Orange then won three of the last four matches to earn the win.

Johnson’s technical fall over Conor Manley broke the tie putting Orange back ahead for good, 15-10. Kyle Narkiewicz edged out Nick Buck in the 184-pound weight class putting Orange ahead, 18-10. First-year Brent Jones earned another win for Orange at 197-pounds when defeated Chudi Uraih, 4-2, extending the lead to 21-10. Blue picked up points in the heavyweight battle. Nick Smith defeated Scott Smith, 3-1, to make it 21-13.

Sewell and Kyle Artusio had wrestle off at 157-pounds which resulted in an 8-1 win for Sewell adding three more points to the Orange team.The Cavaliers will begin the regular season portion of their 2005-06 schedule on, Nov. 13 when Virginia travels to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in a Quad Meet. UVa will face Gardner Webb, UNC Greensboro and Anderson.
