Virginia Swimming And Diving Teams To Host Several Nationally-Ranked Teams This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host several of the top teams in the country Friday and Saturday (November 11 and 12) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 17th-ranked Cavalier men will host top-ranked Auburn, 14th-rated Purdue and 23rd-ranked Penn State in a quad meet, while the UVa women, tied for 18th in the latest CSCAA Poll, will host second-ranked Auburn and 12th-ranked Penn State in a triangular meet. The 19-event meet gets under way at 1:00 p.m. Friday with one and three-meter diving. The swimming portion of the meet begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday and concludes on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. session.
In addition to the diving competition, Friday’s swimming events will be: 200 free relay, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly, and the 400 medley relay. Saturday’s 11:00 a.m. session includes: 200 medley relay, 1000 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 400 individual medley, and 400 free relay.
The Cavaliers are under the direction of 28th-year head coach Mark Bernardino. Both the Virginia men’s and women’s teams are 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The Auburn men are the 2005 NCAA champions, while the Tiger women were the 2005 NCAA runners-up after winning the NCAA title in 2003 and 2004. Both Auburn teams are 3-0 this season. The Penn State men stand at 2-0 overall while PSU women are 3-2. The Purdue men’s team is 3-0 on the 2005-06 season.
Due to Saturday’s football game against Georgia Tech, which begins at 3:30 p.m., there will be no parking available in lots near the Aquatic and Fitness Center Saturday. The available parking options for Saturday are the Central Grounds parking garage and the University Hall parking lot.
