Virginia Women's Soccer Reaches NCAA Quarterfinals with Win Over Cal State Fullerton

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history with a 2-1 victory Sunday over Cal State Fullerton at Klockner Stadium. Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) and Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) scored for the Cavaliers, who tied a school record with their 18th win of the season.
Virginia (18-5-1) controlled the first half of play, outshooting the Titans (19-4-0) 9-2 before the break and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Cavaliers got on the board in the 24th minute on Rostedt’s team-leading 12th goal of the season. After a corner kick, Rostedt had her first shot saved off the line by a Titan defender, but she was able to fire home the rebound for the game’s first goal.
In the second half, the Cavaliers continued to control the game and added to their lead in the 76th minute. Foley dribbled the ball from the flank into the box, where she was fouled by Titan defender Erica Janke. Foley stepped up to make the ensuing penalty kick for her third goal of the year. The Titans had the better of the play after that goal during the final fifteen minutes of the contest. Fullerton was able to get a goal back in the 79th minute as Kandace Wilson scored on an assist from Kellie Cox. The Titans had several other quality chances to tie the game, but Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made three saves during that stretch to preserve the win.
Overall, the Cavaliers had a 14-10 shot advantage in the game. In goal, de Vries made four saves for Virginia, while Karen Bardsley made seven in net for Cal State Fullerton.
Virginia advances to the quarterfinals for the third time in school history and the first time since 2001. The win Sunday was also the Cavaliers’ 12th at home this season, setting a new school record.
“I thought for most of the game we played extremely well today,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “They are not an easy team to break down, but we were composed and moved the ball well. When we went up 2-0, they had nothing to lose and brought everyone forward. Give them credit, they picked up their pressure and we didn’t make great decisions. We are happy with the result and are excited about moving on.”
The Cavaliers will meet UCLA in the quarterfinals on Friday night in Los Angeles. Game time at Drake Stadium is 6:00 p.m. (PT). UCLA reached the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over Marquette Saturday night in Los Angeles.
