It was a tough game. That’s a very good Virginia team, big, strong, fast. Turnovers starting the third quarter really hurt us. Their quarterback is really good with his feet, hard to hem up. They blitzed us. We didn’t pick it up very well. We played very poorly on the offensive line and that made it very difficult for us to move the football. … We could play Virginia 19 times, and 20 times it would be just like that.
I thought George Coleman did a good job. That’s a crying shame what happened on that play (the Coleman touchdown that was called back due to offsetting personal foul penalties). It was away from the play and two guys wrestling. They get a break by getting a penalty.
(Comparing Virginia to previous ACC opponents Clemson, Maryland and Miami) I think they’re all just about alike, and we played some good ones, too. I believe if they all played each other, on any given night, anybody could win the game. I don’t know if Virginia Tech will separate themselves, but it’s a very competitive league. I coached a long time in the SEC. I used to think the SEC was the best league – and I’m still not saying that it’s not – but those [ACC] teams remind me of when I was coaching at Auburn.
(On his upcoming retirement) I’m exciting about not coaching. I’m excited about spending time with my family. I’m looking forward to that. … I think Temple is going to be in good shape in the future in the MAC conference.
Virginia Head Coach Al Groh:
It was a move in the right direction for us, and we’re pleased with that. It wasn’t a Picasso, but it was good.
(On Virginia’s defense) We were disruptive in the backfield more than what we have been, and that’s one of the things you have to do to play good defense. We were aggressive with the calls and the players were aggressive. They did a real good job with it. It produced a lot of three-and-outs, and on a couple of occasions at the beginning of the second half we got good field position, which resulted in scores.
(On Virginia’s offense) Both backs did a nice job with the ball. That should improve their confidence. Generally, we improved our line play. We’ve got a ways to go overall with what we need to do for what faces us next week. Quite clearly that’s going to be a much more severe challenge.

We have to have a good balance. Last year we were a very consistent, very efficient, at times powerful running team. But we didn’t have quite the effectiveness overall in our passing game. But the time when we couldn’t play that way, we had difficulties. We don’t want to revert back. We want to do both things efficiently.
Each game’s gotta be won in its own right. I think maybe some people picture momentum as a guy on a surfboard in Hawaii riding a big wave in. But you’ve got to go out there and grind it out every week.
