Men's Lacrosse Signs 8 to Letters of Intent

Charlottesville, Va. – University of Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia announces the signing of eight student-athletes to national letters of intent to play lacrosse at UVa beginning with the 2006-07 academic year.
“It is my pleasure to announce the names of the young men who have signed national letters of intent to play lacrosse at the University of Virginia. Although `rose-colored’ glasses are often a required fixture of college coaches describing the results of their considerable recruiting efforts, it may be safe to say that a couple of the top high school prospects in the country are in this select group,” said Starsia in making the announcement.
The recruiting class broken down by position:
George Huguely is a 6-2, 205-pound attackman from lacrosse powerhouse Landon in Chevy Chase, Md. He was a second-team All-State selection in lacrosse as a junior last spring. The quarterback on Landon’s league championship football team, he was named the All-IAC quarterback this season.
The midfield starts with twins Brian and Kevin Carroll, who hail from Towson, Md., and attend the Gilman School. Brian is 6-1, 205 pounds, and is a standout in both lacrosse and football. He earned high school All-America honors in lacrosse last season and was named Baltimore City Player of the Year by the Baltimore Sun after scoring 26 goals and adding 17 assists. He was first-team All-Conference linebacker this fall and an first-team all-city choice last season. Kevin, a 6-0, 185 pounder, was a first-team All-Baltimore City last spring. Like his brother, he is also a standout on Gilman’s football team and was a starting cornerback on this season’s undefeated squad.
Brian McDermott is a 5-10, 180-pound native of Cortland, N.Y., and attends Homer High School and Cortland, New York. He scored 40 goals this past spring, while winning 80 percent of his faceoffs. A two-time Central Region Empire Games selection in lacrosse, he was an all-league running back and linebacker on Homer’s league champion football squad this season.
Mike Thompson, from the Collegiate School in Richmond, Va., is a 6-0, 190-pound multisport athlete. He was a high school All-American in 2005 and earned first-team all-state honors as well. He was the starting tailback and safety on Collegiate’s undefeated football team this fall that won its third consecutive state title. His grandfather, Wardlaw Thompson, captained the UVa lacrosse teams in 1947 and 1948.
Three defensemen round out the class. Jon Borror hails from Media, Pa. He is a 6-2, 175-pounder who was named a high school All-American last spring after helping his Haverford School team win the state title. He can play both long stick midfield and close defense and is on Haverford’s soccer team this fall.
Kyle Menendez is a 6-2, 195-pound long stick midfielder from Cockeysville, Md. and the St Paul’s School, alma mater of many Cavaliers through the years. He was a starting defensive back on the Crusaders’ football team and played the final five weeks of this season with a broken wrist.
At 6-2, 210 pounds, Ryan Nizolek is one of the most powerful athletes in the class. He attends Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Conn. He attended the UVa Lacrosse Camp this year and was a member of the 2005 Connecticut Super Juniors lacrosse team. He is a wide receiver and safety on the Hand High football team that is vying for a state championship this Saturday.
“Virginia Lacrosse fans are going to thoroughly enjoy getting to know this outstanding group of student-athletes,” said Starsia. “We are all excited about the prospects for their contribution to the program. There will be an additional announcement in the spring.”
