Thompson, Cavaliers Win Second over Towson, 7-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Freshman right-hander Jacob Thompson struck out five in seven innings of work while Brandon Guyer and Jeremy Farrell each were a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Virginia (4-1) to a 7-2 win over Towson (0-2) in the second game of the three-game series at Davenport Field on Saturday afternoon. It was Virginia’s second win of the series.
“I was very pleased with our performance today. Jacob Thompson gave us another great performance in only his second career start. He battled their batters and had great control,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “We made a couple of mistakes, but they didn’t cost us much. We had some good at-bats in which we were able to put up seven runs. Jeremy (Farrell) and Brandon (Guyer) looked comfortable at the plate and both had good days again.”
Thompson held the Tigers to one earned run on seven hits. Sean Doolittle relieved Thompson and pitched the final two innings, striking out two. Mike Mitchell, Tom Hagan, Beau Seabury and Mike Campagna each had one hit for the Cavaliers.
Virginia scored one run in the bottom of the first when Tim Henry scored on Guyer’s RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the third when Guyer hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Mitchell again as UVa led, 2-0.
Towson cut into its deficit in the top of the fourth. Ryan Schreiter doubled and scored on a single from Brian Conley pulling the Tigers within, 2-1.
The Cavaliers came right back to score in the bottom of the fourth. After Tom Hagan led off the inning with a triple, Farrell lined out to right field to score Hagan making it, 3-1. UVa pushed its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Mitchell scored from third on a ground out by Doolittle.
Virginia had a two-run sixth inning. Farrell singled and moved to third after Seabury executed the hit-and-run. Mike Campagna’s squeeze bunt scored Farrell giving the Hoos a 5-1 lead. Mitchell then followed with a single to right field scoring Seabury as UVa led, 6-1.
The Tigers answered with a run in the top of the seventh on Jimmy Nomikos’base hit scoring Conley, who reached on an error, pulling Towson within, 6-2, but Campagna’s second RBI of the day – a run scoring single plated Hagan giving the Hoos the 7-2 lead.
Matt Holley took the loss for Towson as he allowed two earned runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out two. Josh Brown pitched three innings in relief and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Nomikos and Hans Falkenhan each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers. Nomikos had one RBI.
Virginia and Towson will wrap up their series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Robert Poutier will start on the mound for the Cavaliers while Towson will counter with freshman Austin Hurd.
