UVa Baseball Completes Sweep of Towson, 13-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Matt Bernstine, Brandon Marsh and David Adams all had three hits and sophomore left-hander Pat McAnaney came on in relief to strike out seven in five innings as Virginia completed the series sweep of Towson, 13-3, Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. The Cavaliers (5-1) out-hit the Tigers (0-3), 16-5 and used a six-run fourth inning and five-run sixth inning to rally from a 3-0 deficit.
“Our guys did a nice job this weekend of rebounding after that first home loss,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “We fell behind early today like we did Wednesday, but we were able to put some hits together and score runs. It was nice to see that adjustment just from a couple of days ago. We kept our composure at the plate and on the mound and had some big innings. Pat (McAnaney) bounced back to do what we knew he was capable of doing and Matt (Bernstine) provided a spark for the team with three hits today.”
Bernstine started his first game of the season behind the plate and finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. His first career hit came in the second inning. Marsh went 3-for-5 with two RBI while Adams was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. McAnaney relieved starter Robert Poutier in the third inning and three-hit the Tigers through five scoreless innings. Poutier allowed three runs in two innings, but struck out two. Shooter Hunt and Josh Myers each pitched one scoreless inning and both struck out two.
The Cavaliers scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Adams led off the inning with a single and scored on Jeremy Farrell’s single to left field pulling the Hoos within, 3-1. Bernstine doubled in Tom Hagan and Farrell to tie the game, 3-3. After Greg Miclat’s bunt single and a walk by Mike Mitchell loaded the bases, Sean Doolittle drew a walk to score the go-ahead run as UVa led, 4-3. Adams’ second base-hit of the inning scored Miclat and Mitchell giving the Cavs a three-run lead.
Bernstine made it 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth when he scored on Marsh’s single up the middle.
Virginia then scored five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Guyer led off the sixth with a single and advanced on Adams’ third hit of the day. Hagan doubled to left center to score Adams and Guyer for the 9-3 Cavalier lead. Farrell drove in Hagan to make it, 10-3, and later scored on a passed ball. Bernstine increased the lead to 11-3 when he scored on another single from Marsh.
The Cavaliers’ final run came in the bottom of the seventh after Pat Wingfield walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on back-to-back passed balls.
Towson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings on three hits. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by Pat Fields. Gary Helmick followed with a base-hit to score Fields for the Tigers’ first lead of the series. Towson added a run in the top of the third when Mike Santmyer drove in Hans Falkenhan putting the Tigers ahead, 3-0, but Virginia scored 13 unanswered runs the rest of the way.
Farrell went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Hoos while Hagan finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mitchell, Guyer and Miclat all had a hit for Virginia.
Helmick finished 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Tigers while Santmyer, Ryan Schreiter and Fields all had a hit. Austin Hurd took the loss in his first collegiate start. Hurd allowed six earned runs on seven hits in three innings.
Virginia returns to action Tuesday when the Cavaliers host in-state foe Virginia Commonwealth at 3 p.m. at Davenport Field in the final game of a five-game home-stand.-UVA-
