Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia outscored Denver 5-1 in the second quarter to seize control of the game and post a 13-7 win over the Pioneers this afternoon at the UHall Turf Field. The Cavaliers gained their second win in a row during the young season, while the Pioneers were playing their season opener.
The game was up-and-down throughout as the teams traded goals for the first 17 minutes of play. Matt Ward broke a 2-all tie at the 11:15 mark of the second quarter with what proved to be the game-winning score. Virginia maintained the slim one-goal margin until late in the first half when the homestanding Cavaliers got goals from Matt Poskay and Garrett Billings 22 seconds apart just three minutes before halftime. Following a Denver turnover and a UVa timeout, Ward closed the first half scoring with the 100th goal of his career one minute and 14 seconds before halftime to give Virginia a 6-2 lead at the break. With 101 career goals, Ward is the ninth player in school history to reach the century mark.
Denver’s Adam Goodwin scored less than two-and-a-half minutes into the second half to cut Virginia’s lead to 6-3, but the Pioneers were unable to get any closer. Jared Little scored his second goal of the season and Ben Rubeor scored twice, including a man-down goal, to extend Virginia’s lead to 9-3. Denver’s Brandon Barcus scored Denver’s fifth goal of the game midway through the third quarter, but the Cavaliers answered with three of their own to close the third quarter and take a 12-4 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Rubeor led the Virginia offense with four goals and two assists, while Ward scored three goals and assisted on two others. Freshman Danny Glading passed for a game-high four assists. Goalie Kip Turner recorded 11 saves, before being replaced late in the game by Bud Petit; Petit saved two shots.
Geoff Snider led the Pioneers with two goals, both in the fourth quarter, and an assist. He also won 11 of 21 faceoffs and finished with a game-high 11 ground balls.
Virginia returns to action this Saturday (Feb. 25) at home at 1 pm against Stony Brook. Denver returns home to host Manhattan and North Carolina in its own Pioneer Face-off Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
