Cavalier Baseball Knocks Off Colonials, 11-5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Sean Doolittle recorded six strikeouts in six innings and freshman third baseman Jeremy Farrell delivered a perfect 2-for-2 performance with three RBIs at the plate as Virginia defeated George Washington, 11-5, Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field at UVa Baseball Stadium. The Cavaliers (9-2) won their fifth straight game at home while George Washington fell to 1-4 on the season.
“That was a good George Washington team. They’ve won 40 games the last two years,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “We came out with great energy and scored runs early. That was probably the best we’ve come out all season. However, we did lose focus a little bit at the plate and on the mound in the late innings. We can’t do that and expect to come away with wins against good ball clubs. Sean threw well again today and we bounced back nicely after such a long game two days ago.”
Doolittle (2-0) scattered three hits over six innings in picking up his second win of the season. Robert Poutier tossed two innings in relief and allowed two earned runs and struck out three. Alex Smith finished the game with three strikeouts in one inning.
Brandon Marsh went 2-for-4 with one run scored while David Adams finished 2-for-5 with a one run. John Scaglione and Beau Seabury each drove in two runs.
The Cavaliers built an 11-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh after Scaglione’s two-run single through the right side scored Tim Henry and Mike Campagna.
George Washington scored five runs in the last two innings. Matt Owens doubled in two runs for the Colonials and Justin Dignelli scored on a wild pitch pulling GW within, 11-3. Whitey Wallace’s RBI single up the middle scored Owens cutting the GW deficit to, 11-4.
The Colonials threatened again in the top of the ninth after a double from Tom Shanley scored a run to make it, 11-5, but Smith recorded two strikeouts including the last batter of the game to seal the win for the Cavaliers.
UVa used a three-run fifth inning to go ahead, 9-0. Seabury was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Greg Miclat followed with an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Wingfield scored when Tim Henry hit into a double play for the nine-run lead.
Virginia scored four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead, 6-0. Marsh scored on an error by the right fielder after he led off the inning with a base-hit. Doolittle and Adams followed with back-to-back singles and Doolittle scored on an RBI single by Brandon Guyer giving the Hoos a 4-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position, Farrell doubled in Adams and Doolittle extending the lead to the six runs.
The Cavaliers plated two runs in the bottom of the second when Farrell tripled in Hagan, who walked, for the first run of the game. Farrell scored on a ground out by Seabury putting the Hoos ahead, 2-0.
Henry, Doolittle, Scaglione, Guyer and Hagan each had a hit for the Cavaliers, who out-hit George Washington, 11-7.
Josh Wilkie (1-1) suffered the loss for George Washington as he gave up seven earned runs on nine hits in five innings and struck out four. Justin Prinstein tossed two innings in relief while Jim Duggan pitched a scoreless inning for the Colonials. Michael Parker and Tom Shanley led George Washington at the plate going 2-for-5 and 2-for-4 respectively. Shanley added an RBI. Owens drove in two runs for the Colonials.
Virginia returns to action this weekend when the Cavaliers host Saint Joseph’s in a three-game set at Davenport Field. Friday’s and Saturday’s games are scheduled for 4 p.m. while Sunday’s finale has been moved up to 11 a.m.
