#18 VIRGINIA CONTINUES ROAD SWING BY VISITING RICHMOND WEDNESDAY
No. 18 Virginia takes to the road for its first mid-week nonconference game on the road when the Cavaliers visit Richmond Wednesday. Virginia is coming off a 2-3 week in which the Cavaliers defeated Coppin State and Norfolk State, but dropped three games at Atlantic Coast Conference foe NC State over the weekend. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Pat McAnaney is slated to start his sixth game of the season. McAnaney is 4-1 with a 3.90 ERA.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
The Spiders (10-16) are playing their second mid-week game after defeating James Madison, 13-10, Tuesday afternoon, 13-10. Joe Mahoney led Richmond going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, three of which came on his second home run of the season. Alex Wotring hit a two-run home run for the Spiders. Ben Zeskind, Andrew Justice and Matt McKenna each had two hits in the win over the Dukes. Designated-hitter Vince Riggi was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week Monday after going 7-for-14 last week in helping Richmond take two of three games from UMass. Joe Mahoney is hitting .361 with a team-high 35 hits in 97 at-bats and 18 RBIs. Right fielder Andrew Justice has driven in 20 runs on 25 hits. Richmond is hitting .276 as a team while the pitching staff has compiled a 6.40 ERA.
SERIES VS. RICHMOND
Virginia leads the all-time series with Richmond, 66-53-1. The Cavaliers won the only meeting last season, 11-0, in Charlottesville. UVa is 2-0 against the Spiders under head coach Brian O’Connor. This will be the first meeting between the schools in 2006. Richmond will travel to Charlottesville on Apr. 26.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS
Virginia moved to 24-8 on the season and 6-6 in the ACC after going 2-3 last week. The Cavaliers defeated Coppin State and Norfolk State during the mid-week, before dropping three games at #17 NC State over the weekend. Virginia lost the first game of the NC State series, 10-2. UVa led for most of game two against the Wolfpack including a 9-4 lead in the eighth, but the Wolfpack scored six runs in the last two innings to rally for the win … On the week, UVa hit .331 … The Cavaliers are hitting .343 as a team. Virginia’s pitching staff has posted a 2.64 ERA through 32 games while holding opponents to a .211 batting average … UVa pitchers have struck out 287 batters in 286.2 innings.
HOOS IN THE POLLS
Virginia ranks in the Top 25 in college baseball polls for the third straight week. The Cavaliers are No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, No. 20 in Collegiate Baseball and 22nd in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) Poll. SEBaseball.com has UVa as the 18th best team in the nation, while the Hoos are 17th in the Rosenblattreport.com poll. Eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams are ranked this week in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and the Collegiate Baseball Poll.
HOO NOTES
– Senior Utility Tom Hagan had a good week for the Cavaliers as he hit hit .563 (9-for-16) and drove in eight runs. He scored seven runs of his own, drew six walks and stole seven bases.
– Freshman second baseman David Adams led Virginia in the NC State series hitting .455 (5-for-11). Adams hit .450 (9-for-20) last week with five runs scored and three RBI.
– Junior outfielder Brandon Marsh continued his hot hitting for the Cavs. Marsh hit .421 (.8-for-19) last week with five runs scored, three extra-base hits and two RBI. He’s now hitting .473 (44-for-93) with 26 runs scored, 14 RBI and 10 extra-base hits.
– Senior Josh Myers, freshman Andrew Carraway, senior Alex Smith and sophomore Nick Cruit combined for UVa’s second one-hitter in the 12-1 win over Coppin State. Myers picked up his second win of the season striking out four in six innings.
– Junior center fielder Tim Henry hit his first career home run in the series finale at NC State. It was Henry’s 26th RBI of the season and Virginia’s 10th home run of the season.
CAVALIERS IN BOYDSWORLD.COM RPI
In the latest edition of the college baseball RPI released by Boydsworld.com, Virginia is 18th in the Ratings Power Index. The Cavaliers have gone 6-3 against three of the top six teams in the RPI in Clemson (1), Georgia Tech (4) and Wake Forest (6). While Boydsworld.com RPI, is not the official RPI used by the NCAA. The site uses the formula and bonus amounts with the official results from the 2001 and 2004 seasons. They are extremely close to the official ones and good indicator as the season progresses.
I KEEP ON WALKIN’
Sophomore first baseman/pitcher Sean Doolittle and senior utility Tom Hagan rank in the top 10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference in walks. Doolittle leads the league in total overall walks having drawn 30 in 32 games. Hagan has walked 24 times. Doolittle has a .463 on-base percentage while Hagan has posted a .515 on-base percentage. As a team, UVa has managed to walk 149 times in 32 games, which puts them fourth in the ACC.
