Virginia’s Ginger Miles, part of the vaunted Cavalier defensive unit, was named the National Player of the Week by womenslacrosse.com as well as the ACC Player of the Week by the conference. The fourth-year keeper was also an honorable mention selection by insidelacrosse.com. She is currently ranked seventh in the nation in goals against average with a miniscule 7.55 goals allowed per game.
Miles, who is a part of the J-team Virginia defense (Julie Hauser, Jessy Morgan, Jen Holden, Jinger Miles and Claire “JR” Bordley), helped Virginia to a pair of wins last week with double-digit saves in both games against top-20 competition. Against No. 17 JMU the Cavaliers did not allow JMU on the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes of the game and held them to just six goals while Miles posted 10 saves on the night.
On Saturday Virginia upset the No. 2 Blue Devils 11-10, knocking Duke from the ranks of the unbeaten as Miles made 12 saves. Her final two saves came in the final four minutes of the game as the Cavaliers held a one-goal lead.
Miles’ honor comes on the heels of Morgan’s honor as National Player of the Week and Holden’s being named the National Rookie of the Week last Monday.
Virginia returns to action on Wednesday (Apr 5) as the Cavaliers host Old Dominion. Opening draw against the Lady Monarchs is 7:00 pm.
